Jacklord Tomas

Los Angeles, California

Jack Tomas creates comtemporary abstracts out of mixed media acrylics, prisma, chalk, charcoal, ink, and watercolor on both canvas and wood.

Jack Tomas was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i and discovered at an early age that he was a visual person growing up in a culturally dynamic environment. He came to Los Angeles to study architecture and then onto industrial design.

The urban architecture and landscape of Los Angeles was so fascinating as it was so different from Honolulu. Accordingly, could not resist painting it on canvas or drawing it by ink in sketchbooks. One of the first piecess that he completed was entitled, “L.A. River,” a painting of the original 6th street bridge in Los Angeles before it’s demolition and reconstruction. He was encouraged to spend a great deal of time on that painting, which proved to be his breakthrough as far as style and application.

Jack holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Woodbury University, Burbank, California, and a Bachelor's in Industrial and Product Design from The Art Institute of California Hollywood. His education and professional experience in Hawai’i, Latin America, Southern California and South Eastern Spain, have been very influential in his approach to abstract painting and functional design concepts.

Jack incorporates a beguiling language of color and light in his application, often stressing texture in his works on canvas and paper. The result is a transcendent dialogue between place, space, scale, often suggesting specific locations from his travels. The work embodies the struggle and void necessary for vitality and existence to thrive, bringing the immediacy of the moment to the viewer.

To Jack, art is a raw, organic and spiritual definition of light. Ultimately, art should embody the struggle and void necessary for vitality and existence to thrive, bringing the immediacy of the moment to the viewer.
